Symptoms
Ring spot is a minor fungal disease principally affecting the lower leaves of the sugarcane canopy. Symptoms are well-defined circular lesions on the older leaves. Lesions are straw-coloured in the centre with a darker grey-brown margin bordering on the green leaf tissue. Lesions vary considerable in size and shape. They may coalesce to produce extensive necrotic areas along the tips and margins of affected leaves.

Distribution
The disease occurs commonly in all cane growing regions but has rarely, if ever, been of economic concern.

Cause
Leptosphaeia sacchari is generally considered to be the causal agent. There is no evidence that the disease is spread by using setts from diseased stalks.

History of Incidence
The occurrence of ring spot is not normally recorded in disease surveys, principally because it is of no economic consequence, It is included here because it is often seen in commercial crops

n
