Coastal acid sulfate soils (ass) are naturally occuring sediments deposited inder low elevation estuarine condistions such as coastal floodplains. When exposed to oxygen through drainage or disturbance, these materials produce sulfuric acid, often releasing iron, aluminium and other metals.
The NSW Sugar Industry plays an active role in the management of ass in cane farming areas throughout the region.
